You know it’s going to be a rough hangover when you’re already groaning before you’ve even fully awoken.

Pain dragged me out of whatever dark hole my mind had retreated into by the nape of my neck and plopped me down into a cruel, cruel world. That was even before I opened an eye to let in the stabbing sunlight from the open window.

“Oh, fuck me,” I muttered as I lifted an uncoordinated hand to flop over my stinging eyes.

When I tried to lift my other hand, I found it trapped beneath a warm weight. Turning my head to the side came with a wave of pain that swept from the back of my neck all the way up and over my skull to nestle oh, so sweetly between my eyes. I peeked between my parted fingers and watched as Ciara nestled in closer to my side to seek out the last traces of shade the rising sun allowed.

Her bra strap across her narrow back was hanging on by just a single clasp. Her thong was halfway down her ass, her dress tangled around her ankles, her heels half on, half off. I lifted my chin to take in that I was much in the same state of almost nakedness: shirt torn but on, belt gone, zipper down but button still buttoned, one shoe on, one shoe nowhere in sight. With another groan I eased my head back onto the pillow—no, wait, there was no pillow. I eased my head back onto a bare mattress. Not that it mattered. The only thing that could have provided me any comfort in that state was an IV. Or a medically induced coma perhaps. Or better choices because I was a fucking adult.

Still, despite the killer headache, despite the threatening nausea and the murderous bent of the morning sun, Ciara’s little exhales against my ribs brought a tiny smile to my lips. I closed my eyes and tried to focus on the way her petite fingertips on my chest felt, soft and gentle and sweet. Her hip was against my hip and one of her feet was atop mine like she’d been dancing on my toes in her dreams. Keeping my attention on these little details was enough to take an edge off the seemingly all-encompassing pain.

After a while, Ciara groaned beside me.

“That bad, huh?” I asked, considering whether I should run my hand along her spine or whether that was a step too far.

Ciara sighed and said, “No, I mean, yes, but…”

“Huh?” I turned my head again toward her despite everything inside me protesting any movement of any kind.

Ciara smushed her face into the mattress. Her words came muffled, “Tudistupanumorfambacue.”

Perhaps it was the lingering effects of too much alcohol, but I understood nothing of what Ciara said into the mattress. I asked her to repeat what she’d said. She did. It didn’t help.

When I said stupidly, “Huh?”, Ciara leapt up and ran out of the bedroom, a hand over her mouth. I stumbled after her, reaching her just in time to help hold back her hair as she threw up over the toilet.
